A promising headline. But what’s the evidence?

Three questions to keep in mind the next time a discovery catches your attention.

What was studied?

A new discovery can be interesting without answering every question. Start with the setting: was the work done in cells, in animals, or with people? Then look at the size and design of the study.

The NIH explains that observational studies look for associations, while well-designed randomized trials can help answer questions about cause and effect. These are different tools for different questions.

What was measured?

Go back to the result itself. Does the headline describe the same measurement as the paper? Is the study discussing a laboratory marker, a participant’s experience, or an outcome measured over time?

Write the finding in one simple sentence, including the setting. If you cannot do that without dropping an important qualification, the headline probably needs more context.

What remains unanswered?

The discussion section is often where authors describe limitations and next steps. Read it alongside the conclusion. Look for what was not measured, who was not included, and whether the work needs replication.

A source link should open a door, not end the conversation. Keep asking clear questions, and let the evidence tell you how much confidence a result deserves.
